New St. Marks Baths Photo Gallery - Interior shot: Bathhouse Tiles & Safe Sex Sign

Gay bath house safe sex sign image taken at the New St. Mark's Baths, NYC, 1992

WALL PHOTO:  This photo features a chalk board. It’s an interesting photo that has many features. The chalk board shows safe sex information and information scheduling for the GMHC, Gay Men’s Health Crisis. The New St. Mark’s Baths did a lot for AIDS education and it provided condoms for patrons even though this outreach work was considered, by some patrons, as a damper on their leisure time! Gay men, after all, went to the baths to be free and to escape from the world outdoors. The black tile on the wall was polished daily by a single staff member whose job was to go around the entire place and polish the black tile and to keep it spotless. The scrawl on the board which reads “watch out for ////// she worked here” might have been one of the transients who broke in and lived at the baths after it had been closed down by the city health department.
